The following information is applicable in case of loss of the width or height of the upper jawbone.. Initially, a graft is placed that restores your jawbone and also prepares the missing tooth for a possible implant.
Post Operative Instructions for Sinus Lift
Overall, the process helps build the bone again in the back part of the upper jaw.
It's essential as it makes it possible to place the implants now, as it was not possible before due to not having enough bone, maybe due to the large sinus.
Bone used for grafting has a combination of mixed sources. It includes freeze-dried bone, artificial bone, and maybe your own bone as well. If your bone is also used, then you might have two surgical wounds. One from the donor site and one from the recipient site.
Caution: Dont blow the nose or hold it to stop the sneeze for at least 4 weeks (or maybe more as advised by the doctors). Sniffing gently is okay, but avoid harsh nose blowing.
Avoid the following
● Avoid pinching your nose or try to hold the sneeze
● Sneezing when the mouth is open
● Do not spit and use straws
● Riding a bike fast, SCUBA diving, or flying in pressurized aircraft can also be avoided, as it will put more pressure on the sinuses.
● Don’t lift heavy objects, blow up balloons, or play wind instruments, as these actions can affect healing.
● Avoid smoking, but if required, use nicotine patches.
To help relieve pressure in your sinuses, use Decongestants like Drixoral®, Dimetapp®, or Sudafed®. Also, we will prescribe antibiotics, so have it as directed.
Oral Hygiene
Right after the surgery, you might have some blood mixed with your saliva; it's okay to swallow it, but do not rinse or spit it. Spitting and rinsing can disturb the blood clot, reopen the wound, and may delay the healing phase.
Keep your mouth clean after the procedure to prevent infection. To maintain oral hygiene, use salt water for rinsing and rinse for 4 to 5 times a day, especially after meals, for the next 5 days. To make it, mix half teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.
Avoid brushing the surgical site, especially for the first 2 days. But, when starting again, start gently and be careful when spitting.
If we have prescribed antibiotic mouth rinses, then use them twice a day, once in the morning and once before sleeping. Avoid eating anything after using it, and using it more than 2 times a day can cause teeth to stain.
Smoking
It's better to avoid smoking at all, as it's the major culprit for major dental issues. But if you can't leave forever, then at least avoid it for 2 weeks after the surgery. Use nicotine patches if necessary.
Wearing Nightguards or Prosthesis
If you were wearing dentures or flippers before, dont start wearing them again until the dentist confirms it. Wait till your post-surgery checkup for approval.
If you were wearing a temporary flipper, then dont wear it until the anesthesia effect wears off. But if you are wearing it, make sure it's not touching the surgical site.
If you’re not sure about the denture or flipper fitting, it's recommended not to wear it until you get our approval.
