Avoid eating anything until the anesthesia numbness is completely gone. Eating when it's all numb can accidentally bite your lips, cheeks, or tongue, which can cause injury. Once the effect goes away, you will have pain or discomfort, so take a prescribed or any OTC (non-aspirin) painkiller.

Post Operative Instructions For Frenectomy (Medications)

For pain relief, take Ibuprofen (Advil) 800 mg every 4–6 hours for 3–5 days after the procedure. Take it as directed, even if you are not in pain.

Do not exceed 2400 mg (12 tablets) in 24 hours, even if you still feel discomfort. You may alternate Ibuprofen and Extra Strength Tylenol for better pain relief. Take Extra Strength Tylenol 1000 mg (2 tablets) every 4–6 hours for the next 3–5 days.

Do not exceed 4000 mg (8 tablets) of Tylenol in 24 hours. Important: Take all medications exactly as prescribed. Do not increase or skip doses on your own, whether or not you feel pain.

If you are taking Vicodin, Tylenol #3, Percocet, or Tramadol, take only 1 tablet of Extra Strength Tylenol (not the full dose) since these prescription medicines already contain Tylenol.

If a stronger pain medication has been prescribed, you may fill it at any pharmacy if over-the-counter medicines don’t control your pain. If the medication feels too strong, you may take half a tablet instead.

Do not take these painkillers on an empty stomach, and do not drive or operate heavy machinery after taking them, as they may cause drowsiness or nausea.

You may also have been prescribed antibiotics to help prevent infection. Take them exactly as directed and finish the full course

Dressing

We will place a surgical dressing to protect the surgical side, reduce discomfort and help controling minor bleeding. It will get harden in a few hours and will stay in there for a week or 2. Try to keep the dressing in place until the next appointment and will change it by then.

If it gets loose or out, contact us and dont try to reposition on your own. When brushing, avoid the gums and on the dressing, brush only the biting surfaces carefully.

Bleeding:

Minor bleeding for the first 2 days after the surgery is normal. Try to avoid hot food and rinsing your mouth as it can make bleed last longer.

Have a soft diet and eat from the opposite side. If your procedure was done on the front teeth, dont bite directly. Meaning, Cut them in small pieces and have them from the opposite side.
