Taking Care of Temporary Care

If you have received a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made, it's essential to take extra care during this phase.

  • Avoid Hard Foods: During your temporary crown phase, avoid foods like bubble gum, nuts, and hard candies, as they can loosen or break the crown.

  • Hygiene: It's good to keep hygiene on point, but make sure to use soft bristles and be extra careful around the crown. Flossing can be done as well with the same precautions that are taken around the crown site

Caring for a Permanent Crown:

Once you have received a permanent crown, take the same care as if it were your natural teeth, but please follow the guidelines below:

  • Avoid Eating Hard Food: Yes! Crowns are made of strong and long-lasting material, but it’s still better to avoid hard foods like nuts, ice, hard candy, and popcorn kernels to prevent damage.

  • ● Be cautious while chewing: until the anaesthesia numbness subsides, it is best not to eat from the crown site. Once the effect goes away and you are feeling natural in all these, then you can bite, but be careful to put pressure on the crown in the first days, even if it's the permanent ones.

  • ● Brush Twice a Day: Once you have received a permanent crown, you can brush or floss as you did before. It will help in keeping the crown healthy and clean, and can make it last longer. But, with a simple caution to be careful about the pressure in the first few days or weeks.

Habits that will cause damage to the crown.

Once you have received a crown, you will also want to keep it for a long time and avoid other dental problems. On average, crowns last for 10 to 15 years, but taking good care of it can make it last 20 years or more. Here are a few habits to avoid if you want your crown to last a long time.

  • Teeth Grinding: Some people have a habit of grinding teeth (Bruxism) at night or any other time. This habit can wear or show negative impact on the crown. If you have this habit or you grind teeth in stress, let us know we will recommend a solution of it (nightguard) as it will protect your crown.

  • Smoking: Smoking in general is bad for your health, but it's also bad for the crown. If possible, try to avoid this habit as it can stain your crown and be bad for your gums as well.

Sensitivity

Feeling sensitive after eating or drinking anything hot or cold can occur after surgery, and this sensitivity may be exacerbated if your teeth have previously undergone a root canal. Overall, this should subside after 3 to 5 days, but if it's not improving and causing problems with your daily routine, please visit HQ Dental Design.

Follow-Up Checkups

To ensure that your crown is working fine, we will schedule a follow-up appointment. In this visit, we will look for the crown fitting and make adjustments if required. Even if everything is fine, it's essential to visit us for an after checkup for crown and surrounding gums:
