Post Operative Instructions for Immediate Denture

  • It is recommended to wear dentures after the surgery for the whole 24 hours, even while sleeping. But if you are experiencing excessive bleeding or soreness, then take it off. The dentures act as a bandage and prevent swelling, and help in blood control.

From tomorrow (after 24 hours of surgery), remove the dentures twice a day as guided by the dentist and wash the whole mouth with salt water. The method is simple to make.

Simply, put 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water and rinse the mouth with it. Additionally, clean the dentures using either toothpaste or a denture cleaner, then rinse them well with water.

wear it right after cleaning, as swelling may make it difficult to put them back in later. Depending on the condition, the dentist will tell when you can take the dentures out before sleeping and keep them in water. Generally, you can do this after a week.

Getting several teeth removed at once is different from removing just one or two. This is because the bone needs to be shaped and smoothed before the denture can fit properly. As a result, you may notice the following things:

    ● Minor bleeding is normal for the first 2–3 days after surgery. Biting gently on your dentures can help control it, but avoid biting hard or chewing, as this may make bleeding worse. During the first day, do not rinse, smoke, or use straws. If heavy bleeding continues, remove your dentures and bite firmly on a piece of gauze for 1–2 hours.

  • ● Swelling can stay on the face for 48 to 72 hours. But taking the right action can minimize it. First, start using ice packs on the swelling area for the first 1 to 2 days. Also, keep your head elevated with 2 pillows when lying down. These precautions can help minimize swelling.

  • ● Noticing bruising or discoloration around the eyes, face, or neck is normal.

  • ● A sore throat after your procedure is normal and usually goes away within 2–3 days. This happens because the throat muscles are close to the extraction sites, and swelling in that area can cause mild discomfort.

  • ● Keep your lips moisturized with Vaseline to prevent dryness and cracking at the corners of your mouth.

After getting immediate dentures, it’s normal to notice some changes in your daily life, especially during the first few weeks. You may experience sore spots, a bite that doesn’t feel right, more saliva, or difficulty speaking. These are common issues and will improve as your mouth adjusts and your dentist makes the necessary adjustments to help your dentures fit comfortably. We will schedule a follow-up check-up within 24 to 48 hours to make the adjustments.
